Let's Recycle

Published on Feb 4, 2011 by Derek Eder

Recycling in Chicago is tough for a lot of people. Some are fortunate enough to live within the city's Blue Cart Program, but for the rest of us, we have to haul our recyclables to one of the city's 30 recycling drop off boxes. Unfortunately for us, the locations of these drop off boxes are not easy to find. The city has a page on their website that lists the address for each box, but they are not displayed on a map.

What if the box is full? How do you find the next closest drop off location? What items are we allowed to recycle? These were just some of the questions that I had asked myself while traveling to my local drop off location over the past year. Do Chicagoans even know these drop boxes exist?

To answer these questions and make recycling in Chicago a little easier, my fiancée and I created a website called Chicago Recycling Drop Off. We saw an opportunity to create a map with all of the Chicago locations—both municipal and private—so that it would be easier for anyone to look up a recycling center nearest to them.

I hope you find the site useful. The more people that know how and where to recycle, the better -- so spread the word. Now get out there and start recycling!
